In case the computers wouldn't be available or they are not working properly, or we are not able to view the videos, I will have to modify the lesson. I will lead a discussion about ethics and practicing them in psychological studies. The students will then design an experiement that would be considered unethical and then explain what they can do to make it ethical. The mock experiment should include: Introduction, Hypothesis, Methods, Results, Conclusion.
    Activity Two:
    Description
    Materials
    Setting:
Small group with 5 computers in the classroom
    Description:
The students will break up into groups that I have already assigned. They will create a wiki pape as a team where the will put the information required for the assignment. As a team the students will discussion and develop their own definition of ethics and what it means to be ethical as it pertains to psychology. The students with review the handout of the APA ethical guidelines, they will use this as a reference tool as they complete the assignment. The groups will watch one of the two videos and each group member will be responsible for pointing out an ethichal issue during the video. The group will then write a brief summary of the video together and then list the ethical issues it had. The students will have to match each issue with its corresponding APA ethical guideline from the handout and list that on the wiki. As an extra credit opportunity the students can watch the video they were not able to watch with the group, on their own time. They will have to write a summary of the experiment and list the ethical issues found in the study.
    Materials:
    5 computers in the classroom
Handout of the APA guidelines (one for each student)
Team wiki with new pape titled "Ethical Issues and Psychology"
online videos of Milgram's Obedience Experiment and Stanford Prison Experiment

    Before Class PreparationPreparation:
Print off copies of the APA Ethical Guidelines
    Turn on all computers
Check the website used to view the videos, make sure the videos are loading

    Instruction:
I will be walking around to each group, making sure they are on task and conversation is related to the lesson. I will ask questions to make sure they are understanding the material and the assignment.
    Back
    Up PlanPlan:
In case of a computer malfunction, or the videos not loading, I have developed a back up plan. The students will remain in their groups and come up with a definition of ethics and how it can be applied to psychology. The groups will design an experiment with an ethical issue, they must also find a guideline from the APA handout that goes along with the issue. The experiement should include: Introduction, Hypothesis, Methods, Results, Conclusion. Each group will then present their hypothetical experiement and point out the ethical issues in it. They will then explain what APA guidelines correspond to the issues.

    Subject: Psychology
    Grade Level: High School (9-12)

Standard: 6.5 Understanding the ethical issues in the use of psychological theories and tools.
    Activity One:
    Description
    Materials
    Setting:
Individual use in a computer lab
    Description:
The students will be asked to pull up their wiki on the computer so that they can record the information they gain from the activity, I will use their wikis as a basis for assessment. First I will ask the students to define in their own words what "ethics" and "being ethical" means and how does this term relate to psychology. The students will then review a copy of the APA Ethical Standards. They will use this handout as a guide when watching the videos that pertain to the lesson. I will give the students a choice of which video to watch. The students will view the video on their individual computer. The students task while watching the video is to find the ethical issues going on in the experiment. The students will list the ethical issues on their wiki. The students are to explain why the experiments are unethical and why it is important as a psychologist to be ethical in his/her research. They will then be given the chance to research past psychology experiements that are deemed unethical. They will write down the experiement, the psychologist, and what was unethical about it and turn it in to me for extra points.
